Modeling the Origins and Evolution of Postcolonial Politics: The Case of Ireland

Abstract

This article develops a four-stage model to explain the evolution of postcolonial politics in the Irish context. The Irish began as an indigenous group who sought to reclaim their identity after it had been usurped by British imperialism. In the second stage of this process, the British attempt to undermine Irish culture and identity and replace it with their own. In the third stage of this process, the Irish after independence seek to implement nationalistic policies that demonstrate their own autonomy and assert their unique identity. In the fourth stage of postcolonical development the Irish seek to go beyond achieving an idyllic national past and instead integrate into the modern world economy and culture.
