Wicked Villagers and the Mysteries of Reproduction: An Exploration of Horror Videos from Ghana and Nigeria

Tobias Maria Wendl

Abstract

The article explores some of the major videos produced in Ghana and Nigeria in the 1990s. It examines the intertextual practices of stitching together the most diverse cultural models from local witchcraft folklore, Hong Hong cinema, Brasilian telenovelas and classic Western horror movies into new hybrid narratives and argues that the newly evolved Ghanaian and Nigerian horror genre - although aesthetically and technically still very clumsy and weak - represents perhaps both countries' most striking contributions to our present-day world film culture.
